The ML needs to have coolant added. I read around some sites and they have different directions/instructions on what to do during/after the coolant is added such as turning the heat to highest speed/temp or something. How exactly on the ML?

Follow the directions on the bottle and pre-mix it, if it is required, for your area. Then, add it to the upper reservoir. You certainly don't want air in the radiator. The procedure you're describing seems to be after a flush and change.
